Commission seeks continuation of sales tax
The Unified Commission will be asking residents of Kansas City, Kansas, to renew a 10-year sales tax in the Aug. 7 Primary Election. The tax helps fund public safety and neighborhood infrastructure projects. Voters approved this three-eighth cent sales tax in 2010 by a 70 percent margin. A community survey indicates that the issue will pass again. In 2018, the tax will generate an estimated $10 million. The tax pays for new police and fire vehicles and other public safety equipment. It also pays for 25 police and 25 fire personnel. A significant portion of this sales tax comes from the Village West Area that is paid by out-of-town residents. School Board chooses name for school
The Kansas City, Kansas, School Board, meeting May 8, voted to name a new school in honor of the late Lowell Brune. The new school will combine the attendance areas for the White Church and Bethel communities. Brune was a longtime volunteer at White Church. He was the father of Melissa Brune Bynum, a Unified Commissioner and a Business West Board Member.
Benefit golf tournament planned
The BPU Employee Charity Golf Corporation will host its annual charity golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 8 at Dub’s Dread Golf Course. Activity will begin with a continental breakfast at 7 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee will be $95 a person that will include green fees, breakfast, course refreshments, dinner, awards and prizes. State Representative receives national honor
State Representative Kathy Wolfe Moore (D-36th Dist.) recently received a 2018 Excellence in Advocacy Award from the National Council for Behavioral Health. She is a longtime member of the board of directors of Wyandot Inc., the community mental health agency.
“Across Kansas and across the nation, people are increasingly becoming aware that mental illness touches so many lives and that we all deserve quality mental health services,” she said. State Senator Jim Denning (R-Eighth Dist.) received the same honor.
T-Bones to offer overnight camping for children
The Kansas City T-Bones baseball club is offering overnight camping for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and children with special needs. The activity will include a baseball game, a movie on the giant video board and breakfast the following morning. The Girl Scout date will be Friday, June 1; the Boy Scout date will be Saturday, June 23; and the special needs children date will be Saturday, June 2. For more information, telephone 816-839-6494.
