College President to speak at Annual meeting

Dr. Greg Mosier, who was recently appointed as President of Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, will be the keynote speaker at the Business West Annual Meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the College’s Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. Dr. Mosier comes from Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College where he was Executive Vice President. Dr. Mosier also served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Okmulgee, and as Dean at Moberly (Mo.) Area Community College. Dr. Mosier and his wife Laurie live in the Piper community. They are the parents of two adult children.

Providence, YMCA to sponsor run

Providence Medical Center and the YMCA will sponsor a “Rock, Roll and Run” and a 5-K walk and Run Saturday, Aug. 18 at Providence Medical Center Amphitheater, 633 N. 130th St., in Wyandotte County Park, Bonner Springs. In addition to the 5-K walk and family fun run, there will be an official chip-timed race.  Proceeds will benefit the YMCA. Persons may register at https://runsignup.com/rrr5k. The cost will be $20 in advance or $25 the day of the race. Runners will receive complimentary tickets to performances at the Amphitheater.

Presentation to concern KU Health System

Kathy Wolfe Moore will be the keynote speaker at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20 at the Adventures in Learning program offered by the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kan. She will provide an update about the University of Kansas Health Systems. She is also a State Representative from the 36th District.

Fire Chief chosen

Doug Bach, the County Administrator for the Unified Government, announced recently that Mike Callahan is the new Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Chief. Callahan was chosen after a national search. He comes from the Chicago Fire Department where he served since 1980. The Chicago Fire Department has some 5,000 employees and is the second largest in the United States with an annual budget of $621 million.

Butterfly Festival planned Sept. 15

The thirteenth annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival will be held from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake. Face painting and various craft opportunities will be offered.

Meeting to focus on zoning changes

Mark White, a planning and zoning consultant for the Unified Government, will lead a discussion about zoning code revision at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Chamber of Commerce office, 727 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. He will discuss how to best revise planning and zoning ordinances that best reflect recent studies and developments.
