I was saddened recently to hear of the death of a friend, Don Scaro. He died Nov. 9. He was 74.
Don was my insurance agent who took care of my life and health policy needs. He was a
personable fellow who never quite lost his Brooklyn accent and its corresponding sense of
humor.
Don served as President of Business West during 2008 and 2009. I recall Don appearing before
the Unified Commission, urging then Mayor Joe Reardon to adopt a resolution encouraging
people to shop local.
Don and his wife Jane lived in the semi-rural area of Johnson County near where a huge
industrial park was being developed in Edgerton. They were concerned that the park would
adversely affect their home. My advice was to make certain that governmental officials and
developers were following the rules.
Don was a founding member of JoCo Kiwanis Club, an organization that serves youths.
Persons who would like to contribute in memory of Don may do so. The website is kiwanis.org.
A celebration of Life for Don will be held at Four Colonies Club House #3, 8100 Monrovia St.
Lenexa. Friends may call at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18; a service will begin at 3 p.m.
Murrel Bland is a member of Business West.
