Business West is seeking an Executive Director. Murrel Bland, who has been Executive Director for the past 15 years, is retiring. An extensive job description is attached. College breaks ground for student housing
Kansas City, Kansas, Community College broke ground earlier this year for student housing that will be completed in the summer of 2022. It will be a four-story building that will have 57 four-bed units, seven two-bed units, five ADA mobility units, two three-bed units and one-unit each for the housing specialist and the housing supervisor. Amenities will include a group study hall, a laundry area, a gaming area and a storm shelter.
Key appointments announced at Unified Government
County Administrator Doug Bach recently announced two department heads for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. They are Misty Brown, Chief Counsel, and Ashley Hand, Director of Strategic Communications. Ms. Brown joined the Unified Government 17 years ago as Municipal Prosecutor; she has a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Kansas at Lawrence and a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. Ms. Hand has served as the Chief Innovation Officer for the City of Kansas City, Mo., and the Transportation Technology Strategist for the City of Los Angeles, Calif.

Opening day for the Kansas City Monarchs baseball team will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 at its ballpark in the Legends Outlet. The Monarchs compete in the North Division of the American Association. Search narrows for Police Chief
The four finalist for Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief recently were interviewed by members of the Unified Commission. The candidates are Vince Davenport, Associate Director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance; Pam Waldeck, Deputy Chief of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department; Karl Oakman, Deputy Chief, Kansas City, Mo., Police Department; and Rich Austin, Chief of Police, Milton, Ga. County Administrator Doug Bach will be making a choice sometime soon.
BPU to sponsor golf tournament
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities employees will sponsor its annual charity golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 11 at Dub’s Dread Golf Course. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Entries are due by Sept. 3. This tournament has donated more than $639,000 to charities since its beginning in 1992.
