Business West supports extended hours for restaurants, bars

The Board of Directors of Business West recently passed a resolution supporting extended hours for restaurants and bars from 10 p.m. until midnight. The hours had been restricted because of the coronavirus pandemic. Restaurant and bar owners complained they were losing business to neighboring counties because of longer closing hours. Mayor David Alvey, after conferring with the Unified Government’s Health Department, announced that the hours would be extended until 12:30 a.m. The Kansas City, Kansas, Area Chamber of Commerce also supported the extended hours.

Ground breaking planned at College

Kansas City, Kansas, Community College will hold a ground breaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 for its 260-bed first-class housing units near the parking lot by the Police Academy. Those expected to attend will include Dr. Greg Mosier, the College President; Dr. Ray Daniels, the Chairman of the College Board of Trustees; Mayor David Alvey; and Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, a Unified Commissioner.

Author to speak

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library will sponsor an online talk by Isabel Wilkerson, author of the book “Caste: The Origins of our Discontents” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18. Ms. Wilkerson is a former staff member of The New York Times who won a Pulitizer Prize for her coverage of the 1993 Midwestern floods. Motor vehicle offices reopen

The Unified Government’s motor vehicle services locations at 8200 State Ave. and 710 N. Seventh St., closed because of the coronavirus, are now open. All motor vehicle services can also be conducted by mail and online. For more information, telephone 913-573-2821.

BPU adds kiosk locations

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities has added various kiosk locations for payments of electric and water bills. They include the Price Chopper at 7600 State Ave. and the Hen House at 8120 Parallel Pkwy. The hours for both locations are from 6 a.m. until midnight.
