Business West to sponsor Candidates’ Forums

Business West, in cooperation with Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, will sponsor Candidate Forums for those running in the Aug. 3 Primary Election. The Forums will be for those running for Mayor and Chief Executive Officer of the Unified Government; for Unified Commissioner At-Large, District Two; Unified Commissioners for the First, Fifth and Eighth districts; Sheriff; and Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, First and Second districts.

The Forums will be aired on the public access channels—Channel 17 on the Spectrum network and Channel 146 on the Google network. A specific program schedule will be published in the next issue of the Business West Bulletin. The Forums will also be seen on You Tube.

Vera Bradley comes to Legends Outlet

Vera Bradley is coming to Legends Outlet. The opening date will be Friday, July 2 according to a source in the Legends Outlet office. The store, at 1847 Village West Pkwy, Suite K-109 near The Civic Courtyard Fountain, will offer quilted handbags, luggage and other items at discounted prices. The store is part of a chain that was founded in1982; it has more than 150 stores.

Hotel proposed for Homefield property

An 87-room Fairfield Inn by Marriott hotel is being proposed for 1821,1915 and 1925 N. 98th St. The applicant on documents at the Unified Government’s Urban Planning and Land Use office, is Vimal Ranat. It would be a four-story building with 50,455 square feet of floor space. Homefield will be a development for amateur sport teams on the former Schlitterbahn property.

BPU chief receives top award

William (Bill) Johnson, the General Manager of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, recently received the Mark Crisson Award for Leadership and Managerial Excellence. The award was presented at a national conference of the American Public Power Association in Orlando. He oversees all functions of the BPU which includes 600 employees with an annual budget of $348 million.

Barbecue contest to return to Kansas Speedway

The American Royal World Series of Barbecue will return to the Kansas Speedway, Sept. 16 through Sept. 19. This will mark the 41st year for the event; it attracts competitors from around the world. For more information, see the website www.americanroyal.com.
