Business West to sponsor social media workshop

Business West will offer a social media workshop starting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 in Room 3632 Flint Hall at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College. A continental breakfast will be served and there will be time for networking.

Paige Cahill, the regional development director for Constant Contact, will lead a panel discussion about how social media can grow a business. Other panel members will include Bridget Koan of the Chamber of Commerce and Malia Yang of the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. Those attending will learn of best practices for marketing on line using social media tools.  Various social media platforms will be examined with examples of what is best to increase sales.

The workshop will then move to the computer lab in Room 3619A Flint. Participants will learn how they can improve their websites. Computer monitors will be provided; however, participants will be encouraged to bring their laptops.

The Community College and the Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsors of the workshop. The cost of the session will be $15 per person for Business West and Chamber members and those affiliated with the College; $20 for others. Business West sets date for Annual Meeting

Business West will hold its 28th Annual Meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at the home of Dr. Tim and Allison DeWitt, 4200 N. 123rd Ter., in the Piper Community. Officers and directors for the coming year will be elected. There will be no charge for the meeting or dinner; however reservations are strongly encouraged. BPU enters into consent agreement

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities and the Unified Government recently entered into a consent agreement with the Sierra Club to settle allegations that opacity at the Nearman and Quindaro power plants exceeded levels allowed by air permits. Opacity is the degree that transmission of light is reduced by particles in the air. The consent agreement generally requires the two Quindaro generating units stop burning coal by April 16, 2015 and that the Nearman plant adds baghouse controls.

Employees move into new Cerner building

The first of what will be 4,000 employees recently moved into the Cerner campus in Village West. The medical software company is investing $190 million in the twin buildings that have 650,000 square feet of floor space. The average employee at this Cerner complex earns about $54,000 annually. The second building will open early next year.

Ribbon cutting planned Aug. 12 at Technical Education Center

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the opening of the Thomas Burke Technical Education Center at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at 6501 State Ave. The Center, which cost $23 million, will house 20 programs in the former Wal-Mart shopping center and former nearby automobile dealerships.

Fair continues through Saturday

The annual Wyandotte County Fair will continue through Saturday, July 27 at 13700 Polfer Rd. Various commercial, 4-H and open class exhibits will be on display. Providence names chief medical officer

Dave Duly was recently named as the chief financial officer at Providence Medical Center and Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth. He joined Providence in 1989 as director of finance. He received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and business and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He is a certified public accountant.

New members welcomed

Business West added three new members recently. They are Ken and Cassandra Savage who own four McDonald’s restaurants including the one at 7530 State Ave.; Bob Davis, the owner of Thatcher’s Mortuary; and the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. The Schlitterbahn management includes Chris Thomas, the general manager and Chuck Stites, the development director.

Members always welcome at board meetings

All Business West members are welcome to attend monthly Business West Board Meetings. Normally the board meets at 12:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the Board Room of Sunset Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Pkwy., in the Arrowhead Center.  The next board meeting will be Aug. 21.
