Business West to sponsor social media workshop
Business West will offer a social media workshop starting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 in Room 3632 Flint Hall at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, 7250 State Ave. A continental breakfast will be served and there will be time for networking.
Paige Cahill, the Regional Development Director for Constant Contact, will lead a panel discussion about how social media can grow a business. Other panel members will be Alice Brewer of The World Company, Bridget Koan of the Chamber of Commerce, Maila Yang of the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and Dick Ward of Wyandotte Publishing. Various social media platforms will be examined with examples of what is best to increase sales. There will be time for questions and answers.
The workshop will then move to a computer lab to explore social media tools and how participants can improve their websites. The Chamber of Commerce and the Community College are co-sponsors of the workshop.

Business West plans for 28th Annual Meeting
Business West will hold its 28th Annual Meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at the home of Dr. Tim and Allison DeWitt, 4200 N. 123rd Ter. in the Piper community. Officers and directors for the coming year will be elected. Those officers nominated include Kathleen Meyers Baska, Past-President; Marisa Gray, President; Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, President-Elect; and Lesley Johnson, Treasurer. Directors nominated for two-year terms include Sheryl Becker, Matt Browning, Pat Sedlock and Nancy Winkler. Those directors who will continue to serve another year of their two-year terms are Dr. DeeAnn Richards Behrens, Melissa Bynum, Dr. Tim DeWitt, Joe Maderak, Rusty Roberts and Don Scaro. Murrel Bland will continue as an advisory director.
The Business West Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 p.m. before the Annual Meeting.
Providence begins roof project
Providence Medical Center recently began a $1.2 million project that will replace nearly 50,000 square feet of roofing. Delta Innovative, a commercial roofing contractor, is doing the work that should be completed this fall. Randy Nyp, the President at Providence, said this is part of a $10 million capital commitment that the new owner, Prime Health, has made to Providence and Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth. Several other construction projects are or will be underway at Providence. They include a new heating and air conditioning system for the east tower of the medical office building; retrofitting a tray conveyor system and upgrading parking lots, sidewalks including striping and stenciling parking areas.
BPU Ethics Commission to meet
The Ethics Commission of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Conference Room B of the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St.
Former Mayor joins law firm
Joe Reardon, who served two terms as Mayor and Chief Executive Officer of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, recently joined the McAnany, Van Cleave and Phillips law firm. His practice areas will include technology-entrepreneurial law, public policy and economic development and real estate law. He said he will continue to help foster projects that promote public-private partnerships. Also joining the law firm are John J. Jurcyk Jr. and Pam Horton Curtis. Both were members of the Mayor’s staff.
Training completed
Tonja Speer, the Executive Director of the Wyandot Center, was one of two Kansans who recently completed crisis counseling assistance training that the Federal Emergency Management Agency conducted in Emmitsburg, Md. The co-sponsors of the training were the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Center for Mental Health Services.

All Business West members are welcome to attend monthly meetings of the Business West Board of Directors. The next Board Meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at the home of Dr. Tim and Allison DeWitt, 4200 N. 123rd Ter., in the Piper community. Normally the meetings are held at 12:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the Board Room at Sunset Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Pkwy., in the Arrowhead Center.
