State Avenue Committee plans Annual Meeting

The State Avenue Corridor Planning Committee will hold its Annual Meeting for landowners and other interested persons at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Conference Center at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, 7250 State Ave. The guest speaker will be Rob Richardson, the Director of Urban Planning and Land Use for the Unified Government. He will tell of the overall plan for State Avenue. One of the proposed aspects of this plan would be to develop the vacant auto dealership at 73rd Street and State Avenue into an apartment complex and limited retail.

Business West gathers signatures for Community Improvement District

Business West, in cooperation with the Unified Government, is gathering signatures for a petition that would establish a Community Improvement District along State Avenue from 64th to 94th streets and 78th Street from State to Riverview avenues. The district would focus on three core areas—appearance, security and marketing.

Business West to publish ‘Looking West’ directory

Business West is preparing to publish its 2014 directory in cooperation with the Leavenworth Road Association. The directory will be a reference guide that will focus on things to know, things to do and things to see. It will be beneficial for newcomers and also those who are more established residents. Officers, directors elected

Business West elected officers and directors for the coming year at the organization’s recent Annual Meeting. Officers include Kathleen Meyers Baska, Past-President; Marisa Gray, President; Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, President-Elect; and Lesley Johnson, Treasurer. Directors elected for two-year terms include Sheryl Becker, Matt Browning, Pat Sedlock and Nancy Winkler. Those directors who will continue to serve unexpired terms include DeeAnn Richards Behrens, Melissa Bynum, Tim DeWitt, Joe Maderak, Rusty Roberts and Don Scaro. Murrel Bland will continue as the Executive Director.

Medical practice moves

Dr. Carlos Palmeri and his wife, Dr. Maria Palmeri recently have moved their family medical practice exclusively to 6345 Long St., Shawnee. The practice was at 1150 N. 75th Pl. Remaining at the Kansas City, Kansas, location are Dr.  Michael Tamer, a family practitioner, and his wife, Dr. Hallamoussa, an internist.

New members welcomed

Maj. Tyrone Garner, who is a member of the command staff of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, is a new individual member of Business West; he is a former commander of the West Patrol. Also recently joining Business West was Ed Milberger Pest Control. Ed owns the Alpine Building complex and also recently purchased the building at 2804 S. 44th St.

College to offer dinner, musical Saturday, Oct. 19

Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, in cooperation with El Centro, will present the Tony Award-winning musical “A night in the Heights.” A reception and dinner will be in the upper level of the Jewell Building; the performance will be at a 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Theater. The cost will be $20 for adults and $15 for students and older adults. Tables for eight are available for $200. Proceeds will benefit student scholarships.
