Looking West publication planned
Business West, in cooperation with the Leavenworth Road Association, will publish the 2014 edition of Looking West. The publication will tell readers things to know, things to do and things to see. The deadline for advertising space reservations will be Friday, Nov. 15. The target market will be newcomers in addition to residents who are more established. All area businesses will receive the publication as an insert in Business West News. The Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau will also distribute copies. College to co-sponsor Kansas City Startup Weekend
Kansas City, Kansas, Community College will co-sponsor the Kansas City Startup Weekend from Friday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Nov. 17 at the new Technical Education Center. The goal of the activity will be to help entrepreneurs turn ideas into reality. Judges, who have developed successful start-up companies, will advise participants how to design, test and market proposed businesses. The cost for the event, which will include meals, will be $80 for an individual or $50 for a student.
Providence has new sign
Providence Medical Center will turn on the lights for its new sign at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. The public will be invited. Refreshments will be served in its main lobby.
Federal Reserve President to speak
Ester George, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will be the featured speaker of the Fairfax Industrial Association at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Neff Packaging, 555 Sunshine Rd. George was appointed to her present position in October of 2011. She is a native of Faucett, Mo., and received her bachelor’s degree from Missouri Western State University, St. Joseph. Veterans invited to annual event
All veterans are invited to attend the annual Veterans’ Commemoration Event starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave. The featured speaker will be Bruce Newby, the Wyandotte County Election Commissioner and a retired U.S. Army officer. Others planning to attend include Mayor Mark Holland and Cheyne Worley, the veterans affairs representative from U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder’s office. Displays and refreshments are planned. The Schlagle High School Marching Band, the Washington High School Junior Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps and the Piper High School “Music-in-Motion” group will perform. The event sponsors include the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, The Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library.
Public Library to celebrate Kansas City Jazz
The opening reception for the “Bop in the Dotte” will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. An exhibit of Dan White’s photographs of jazz musicians will be displayed through Tuesday, Jan. 7. ; Curator Chuck Haddix will interview White. The Kansas City Jazz Quartet will perform. Programs and music are also planned at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. Fanny Alaadeen, the wife of the late Ahmad Alaadeen, will tell about her husband and sign copies of her book, “The Heartbeat Next to My Heartbeat“ at 3 p.m. Sunday Nov. 17; the Young 21ers will perform. Haddix will discuss his new book “Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. Parker was a Kansas City, Kansas, native. Pablo Sanhueza will lead a workshop on Latin Jazz at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at the South Library, 3104 Strong Ave.; a concert will follow at 7 p.m. The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra will perform at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the Wyandotte High School Auditorium.
