Mayor Holland to speak at membership meeting

Mayor Mark Holland will be the featured speaker at the Business West Membership Meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 29 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. The Mayor will tell of various development activities in the West Wyandotte County Area. There will be time for questions and answers. The cost for the meeting will be $20 per person that will include lunch. BPU to offer workshop

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities will sponsor a free energy-efficiency workshop in two 2-hour sessions Monday, June 8 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. The first offering will be from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m.; the session will be repeated from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Topics will include why a homeowner needs an energy audit, the advantages of a home solar power system and how to save money on a utility bill with a home energy audit. Benefit set for children’s emergency shelter

Wyandot Inc, the parent organization for various social services, will sponsor a celebration that will benefit Robert’s Place, an emergency shelter for children who have been placed in police protective custody because of suspected abuse. The shelter was named in honor of Robert Zevenbergen, 20, who was killed in an auto accident near DeSoto in Johnson County on K-10  March 20 last year. The event will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at the St. Patrick’s Parish Center, 1066 N. 94th St.; it will be entitled “Remembering Robert, a luau with love.”  The cost will be $25 a person. Robert was the son of Pete and Cindy Zevenbergen. Pete was the former chief executive officer of Wyandot Inc.; Cindy was a nurse at Providence Medical Center. Conference to focus on solutions to urban problems

Kansas City, Kansas, Community College will sponsor a conference focusing on solutions to very deep-rooted urban problems from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, June 13 in the performing Arts Center. TEDxWyandotte, an annual event, will feature six speakers. The speakers and their subjects will be Vi NhamTran, “The empathetic power of storytelling’”; Annette LeZotte, “Sorting out race”; Hong Hong Hui, “My pipa speaks for me”; Dre Taylor, “Males to men”; Janice Burdine, “Negative space”; and Shannon Oleen, “The millennial divide or what I learned from living on a canoe.”  TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, was founded in 1984 by Richard Saul Wurman, an architect from Newport, R.I.
