Business West to co-sponsor personnel workshop

Business West, in cooperation with Kansas City, Kansas, Community College and other community organizations, will sponsor a personnel workshop from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24 in the upper level of the Jewell Building at the college, 7250 State Ave. The presenter will be Kay Jarvis. Her topic will be “Think before you hire—maintaining a legal hiring process.”  Jarvis is director of client services at the Power Group companies of Overland Park. She has extensive experience in the human resources field. The cost for the workshop will be $10 for Business West members; breakfast will be included.

Unified Commission to install members

Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, president-elect of Business West, will be installed as a new member of the Unified Commission from the eighth district at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in the commission chamber at City Hall.  Others to be installed will be commissioners Carolyn Townsend, first district; Mike Kane, fifth district; and Jim Walters, eighth district; and Mayor Mark Holland.

BPU installs members

Tom Groneman, a former register of deeds, was sworn in as a new member of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities. Previously he served as director of the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. Other returning BPU members who were installed were Dave Alvey and Mary Gonzales.

Medical Center has new owner

Prime Healthcare, a for-profit organization, is the new owner of Providence Medical Center, effective April 1. The sale from SCL Health Systems came after approval from Derek Schmidt, the Kansas Attorney General, who had to approve the sale of the nonprofit hospital to a for-profit corporation. Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, was also part of the sale.

Hearing planned on proposed interchange concept

The Unified Government will hold a public hearing on proposed changes for the intersection of Village West Parkway and State Avenue from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.  Tuesday, April 23 at Great Wolf Lodge, 10401 Cabela Dr. Displays will show various proposals for anticipated traffic. Agency selected for national project

The Wyandot Center is among 10 organizations chosen to participate in the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare’s advancing standards of care for people with bipolar disorder. This will involve learning conferences, webinars and access to technical assistance. The Wyandot Center is the county’s designated mental health center.

Members always welcome

Business West members are always welcome to attend the monthly meetings of its board of directors. The board meets at 12:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the Board Room at Sunset Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Pkwy., in the Arrowhead Center.
