Business West, Unified Government to host meeting about State Avenue

All interested persons are invited to attend a meeting to learn of the progress along the State Avenue Corridor from 11 a.m. until noon Tuesday, Dec. 9 in a heated tent at 78th Street and State Avenue in the Wyandotte Plaza Shopping Center.

Dave Claflin of Red Legacy, the owner of Wyandotte Plaza, will talk about the what has and will happen at the shopping center.

Joe Maderak, the founder of Business West and the chairman of the State Avenue Corridor Planning and Marketing Committee, will tell of the renewed interest in property in the corridor.

A Schlitterbahn representative handling the expanded development of its property will tell of plans including auto dealerships.

Marisa Gray who heads Workforce development for Kansas City, Kansas, Community College and is President of Business West, will tell of the importance of public and private cooperation.

County Engineer Bill Heatherman will tell of the resurfacing of the roadway and the rebuilding and landscaping of the medians.

Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, President-Elect of Business West and a Unified Commissioner from the Eighth District, will offer closing remarks.

Refreshments from MeMa’s Old-Fashioned Bakery in Wyandotte Plaza will be served. There will be no cost for the meeting; however, reservations are strongly encouraged.

Business program offered for baby boomers

Five community organizations will join to present a “Business Basics 4 Boomers” program from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at the Technical Education Center at Kansas City, Kansas, Community College, 6565 State Ave. The target audience will be those persons 50 years and older who are interested in starting a business. The sponsors are the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, the Next Chapter Kansas City, the American Association of retired Persons, the Jewish Heritage Foundation and the Community College. The cost will be $10 per person for those who are members of the Next Chapter, Seen and Prime Time Club and $15 for others.  The cost includes lunch. Hardware store to help with light recycling

Westlake Ace Hardware, 7523 State Ave., in cooperation with Southeast Enterprises, is offering a recycling drive for old  and non-working holiday lights. A spokesman said this project will help the environment by keeping lights out of landfills and also provide work for those with disabilities. For more information, telephone 913-334-6336.

BPU seeks members of Ethics Commission

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities is seeking letters of interest and resumes from persons who desire to serve on the BPU Ethics Commission. The purpose of the Commission is to assure implementation of BPU’s code of ethics and to review and report all violations of that code. There is one vacancy to be filled.  Applicants must be residents of Wyandotte County and cannot be a convicted felon. T-Bones chosen ‘Organization of the Year’

The American Association announced recently that the Kansas City T-Bones baseball club has been selected as the league’s “Organization of the Year” for 2014. This makes the fourth time that the T-Bones has received the award since moving to Kansas City, Kansas, in 2003. John Ehlert, the owner of the T-Bones, said it is a tremendous honor to receive the award. He credited the hard work of his son, Adam Ehlert, the team’s president, and Chris Browne, its vice president, along with the front office and baseball staff.
