Taxpayers look forward to lower property taxes

Most Wyandotte County taxpayers should see a decrease in their property tax statements following proposed budgets of the various taxing units. A residential or commercial property taxpayer in the Kansas City, Kansas, School District should pay less this cycle as the school district submitted a budget showing an 11-mill decrease. The Unified Government and the Community College held the line with spending for the coming year. Business West visited all units of local government, urging elected officials to hold the line on property taxes.

National soccer training center announced

Plans for a $75 million national soccer training center were announced late last month. It would use some of the land that is part of the Schlitterbahn Water Park and additional property to the east. It would use sales tax accelerated revenue bonds that were originally authorized in 2005, but never issued. It would also fund improvement for Schlitterbahn. The total STAR bond issue could be nearly $300 million. A hotel is proposed. The impact of the center, which would train players, coaches and referees, could result in an estimated 30,000 room nights annually in area hotels.
