Business West elects officers, directors

Business West elected officers and directors for the coming year at its Annual Meeting Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the home of Dr. Tim and Allison DeWitt in the Piper community. Officers elected include Marisa Gray, President; Dr. Jane Winkler Philbrook, President-Elect; and Lesley Bishop Johnson, Treasurer.  Returning directors re-elected for two-year terms were Dr. DeeAnn Richards Behrens, Melissa Bynum, Dr. Tim DeWitt, Joe Maderak, Rusty Roberts and Don Scaro.  Chuck Stites was elected to fill an unexpired one-year term. Murrel Bland will continue to serve as Executive Director. Continuing directors who will serve the second year of a two-year term are Sheryl Becker, Matt Browning and Pat Sedlock. About 30 members attended the meeting. Members thanked the DeWitts for hosting the meeting and Rusty Roberts of Reece Nichols Roberts Realtors for providing the brisket.

Retiring jeweler honored

Nancy Winkler, who is retiring from her jewelry business, received the first-ever Joe Maderak Award for Outstanding Community Service at the Business West Annual Meeting Sept. 16. She was recognized for her many contributions to Business West. She served as President of the organization for three years. She also was a long-time member of the Business West Board of Directors and chairperson of its Retail Committee. The store was founded by her great-grandfather, Frank Winkler, in 1889 on Minnesota Avenue in downtown Kansas City, Kansas; he was a German immigrant watchmaker.

Endowment Association plans benefit

The Kansas City, Kansas, Community College Endowment Association will host its first-ever 4.0 Gala at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct.  25 at the Lake Quivira Country Club. Money raised from the dinner and auction will go toward scholarships. Highlights at the event will include the presentation of the Wyandotte Countian of the Year, to Joe Reardon, the former Mayor of the Unified Government, and the  Kansas City, Kansas Community College’s Distinguished Alumni award to Karen Orr, the chief nursing officer at Providence Medical Center. Kansas Supreme Court to hold session at college

The Kansas Supreme Court has chosen Kansas City, Kansas, Community College as its next community destination. The court will be in session from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday, Oct. 29 in the performing Arts Center, hearing oral arguments on two criminal cases and three civil cases. The court has held sessions in other Kansas cities including Pittsburg, Greensburg, Salina, Wichita and Overland Park. “Community visits are a great way for the people of Kansas to get to know us, who we are and what we do, and learn about the judiciary’s role in our society,” Lloyd Nuss said. He is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Class to focus on retirement

The Next Chapter KC program of the Shepherd’s Center will sponsor a two-session class for persons who have recently retired or those who will soon retire from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesdays, Nov. 5 and 12 at Welborn Community United Church of Christ, 5217 Leavenworth Rd.
