County Appraiser to speak at Business West Annual Meeting
Kathy Briney, who was recently appointed by the Unified Commission as County Appraiser, will be the featured speaker at the annual membership meeting of Business West at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the main building at the entry to Schlitterbahn just west of 94th Street and State Avenue.
Briney came to Wyandotte County in April 2015 to become the Deputy County Appraiser. She was appointed Interim County Appraiser when County Appraiser Gene Bryan retired late last year; the Unified Commission confirmed her appointment as County Appraiser in June earlier this year.
Briney has more than 23 years of appraisal and public service. She worked for the Property Valuation Division of the Kansas Department of Revenue and has served either as the County Appraiser or Deputy County Appraiser for Ford, Butler, Jefferson and Barton counties.
Briney has an adult son and daughter who live in Johnson County. She enjoys hiking, landscaping, gardening and competing in 5K races.

Officers and directors for the coming year will be elected.

New restaurant opens
The Mason Jar Brews and Burgers restaurant opened recently at 941 N. 74th Dr.
Manager Roger Gibbs said response to the new restaurant has been very good.
Menu items include steak tacos, fish tacos, fish and chips, grilled chicken, prime rib, grilled salmon and chicken tenders. Appetizers include garlic and chili French fries, onion rings and pretzel sticks.
Specialty drinks include the Mason Jar Mule and the Mason Jar Margarita. Happy hours are from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day Sunday. Various domestic and craft beers are available.
There is a private meeting room for groups up to 25. The restaurant has 5,000 square feet of floor space and can accommodate up to 175 persons.
The Mason Jar is located where the Sports Page used to be. Developer Cliff Dale said extensive renovation was done on the building and the nearby parking lot and adjacent area. Shepherds Center to celebrating 30th anniversary
The Shepherds Center of Kansas City, Kansas, will celebrate its 30th anniversary from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #45, 7844 Leavenworth Rd. Providence earns trauma center designation
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has designated the emergency room at Providence Medical Center as a Level IV trauma center.
As part of the states trauma network, good communication between EMS and other designated trauma facilities ensures patients are properly evaluated and taken to the hospital with the most appropriate resources as quickly as possible, Dr. Stephen Lowry said. He is the director of the trauma center and a general surgeon.
Wyandot Inc. to hold annual meeting
Wyandot Inc., the parent corporation for social service agencies, will hold its annual meeting from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Savior Pastoral Center, 12600 Parallel Pkwy. The featured speaker will be Donovan Gardner, a mental health advocate. Agencies that serve clients under the umbrella of Wyandot Inc. include the Wyandot Center for community behavioral healthcare, the center for Parent, Adolescent and Child Empowerment Services, Kim Wilson Housing and Rainbow Services Inc., a 24-hour crisis center.
